The Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4 are Europe's two best-selling electric SUVs. Both cost around €45,000–55,000 in full trim, and both offer 500+ km of range. But they are fundamentally different cars with different philosophies. Which is the better choice for Bulgaria?

Specs at a glance

| | Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD | VW ID.4 Pro 4MOTION | |---|---|---| | Battery | 75 kWh (net) | 77 kWh | | WLTP range | 533 km | 510 km | | Power | 378 hp | 299 hp | | 0–100 km/h | 5.0 sec | 6.2 sec | | Max DC charging | 250 kW | 175 kW | | Price in BG (approx.) | ~€54,000 | ~€52,000 |

Charging: Tesla wins clearly

Tesla's Supercharger network is the undeniable advantage. In Bulgaria, there are Supercharger stations in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and along the main motorways. Charging is fast (up to 250 kW), with no need for a card or app — you just plug in.

The VW ID.4 relies on the CCS network — Eldrive, EVN, OMV Electra, and others. Quality is more uneven: malfunctioning chargers, the need for multiple apps. The situation is improving, but it's still far from the convenience of Supercharger.

Winner: Tesla Model Y

Real-world range under Bulgarian conditions

Driving at 120 km/h on the motorway, real-world range is:

  • Tesla Model Y LR AWD: around 380–400 km
  • VW ID.4 Pro 4MOTION: around 350–380 km

In city driving, the gap narrows. The ID.4 performs very well in the urban cycle thanks to efficient regeneration.

Winner: Tesla Model Y, by a small margin

Interior and technology

Here opinions diverge. Tesla goes for minimalism — almost everything is controlled through the 15.4-inch center screen. No physical buttons, no head-up display, no instrument cluster in front of the driver.

The ID.4 takes a more traditional approach: an instrument display, voice control, physical buttons for climate and key functions. The interior feels more premium in higher trims, but the plastics in the base model don't impress.

Winner: depends on preference — tech enthusiasts favor Tesla, traditionalists prefer VW

Service and support in Bulgaria

VW ID.4 benefits from an extensive dealer network — the Volkswagen Group is present in almost every major Bulgarian city. Trained staff and parts availability are a real advantage.

Tesla operates a limited number of service centers in Bulgaria (mainly in Sofia). Many repairs are handled through Mobile Service — a technician comes to you. For more complex repairs, waiting times can be longer.

Winner: Volkswagen ID.4

Cost of ownership

The Tesla Model Y has lower maintenance costs — no oil changes, simpler brakes (regeneration reduces wear). But in the event of an accident or non-warranty repair, Tesla parts are more expensive and harder to source in Bulgaria.

The ID.4 uses standardized VW Group parts, which are easier to find.

Resale value

Historically, the Tesla Model Y has held its value better than the ID.4. Data from 2023–2025 shows Tesla retaining 55–65% of its new price after 3 years, versus 45–55% for the ID.4. But the trend is narrowing as more EV models enter the market.

Which one is for you?

Choose the Tesla Model Y if:

  • You regularly drive on motorways and the Supercharger network covers your route
  • You want maximum range and the fastest charging
  • The tech-forward approach and OTA updates appeal to you

Choose the VW ID.4 if:

  • You live outside Sofia and nearby service availability is a priority
  • You prefer physical controls and a more traditional interior
  • Subsidies or company-car schemes make the VW Group option more financially attractive

Both are excellent cars. In Bulgaria, the right fit for you depends mainly on your geography and how much you prioritize service access.
